AMITY’S FIRST DAY OF KINDERGARTEN

Dear Amity,

I told myself that I wouldn’t be one of those moms who cry on their child’s first day of Kindergarten.  How sappy, right??  Besides, you and your sister have been attending daycare on an mostly full time basis for quite some time now.  What was the big difference?  And you are so ready for Kindergarten!  I’ve been so excited for you.  What is there to cry about?

You had chosen what you were going to wear on your first day of school.  It was an outfit that we picked out at Target a few weeks ago.  A gray shirt with a graphic tiger face and the words “go get ’em” printed on it.  You were going to pair it with black leggings that have sparkles.  It was cool.  But then, Oma (Tante to me), in New York sent you a new outfit for school and it was suddenly upgraded to First Day status.  I don’t blame you.  I love it so much.  You are almost six but this 5T size fit you perfectly.  We usually have a hard time finding skirts that don’t slip over your tiny hips.  For a long time you have abhorred 3/4 lengths shirts but just a few days before getting this in the mail daddy had explained to you the generous benefits of 3/4 length sleeves…I mean, the warmth it provides for your elbows without having to push up your sleeves when doing art projects?  Win-win.  Your backpack was also picked out by you.  It is the most sparkly Star Wars backpack you’ll ever see.  Very you.

We took these pictures out front and said goodbye to dad and sister.  We still had some time to kill before it was time to head up to your school.  It is only about a 3 minute drive away.  You suggested we play Sequence for Kids.  I reheated my coffee and sat down with you.  That’s when I started crying.  Silently of course.  I didn’t want you to know.  Just looking at your beautiful self, listening to you explain the rules to me, knowing how excited you were…the pride swelled in me.

I recently found out from my dad that my mom just barely missed my first day of Kindergarten.  One of her goals was to make it to see me go to school.  She died August 18th.  Just a few weeks before my first day.  My heart aches for her.  For me.  She was so close.  She wanted to be there so badly.  So its not lost on me what a gift it is to be here on earth with you, to see you off on your very first day of school.  From tiny little baby, to toddlerhood, then preschool, and now elementary school.  Its a whole new chapter of life!

Watching you line with with all of those big kids…that’s when I started crying all over again.  This time I was really trying hard to pull it together.  I could barely talk to you.  You are so small next to all of those big kids!  What were you going to do today?  Would they take good care of you?  What would you learn?  I got the sense that you were supposed to get in the Kinder line and that is where we would say goodbye.  At the front door.  You were so brave and waved goodbye to me.  Then I saw all these parents go in too!  Well!  I was going in then too.  I found you in your classroom and you were so happy to see me!  I told you I didn’t realize parents could come in.  You had already hung up your backpack.  You got settled in and we said one more long goodbye.

All day I wondered how you were doing.  Could no one just please send me a few text messages throughout the day letting me know?!  : )  I was so anxious to pick you up.  I pictured a glorious reunion of mother and daughter.  We tested the waters of the after school program today too.  When you saw me?  Sheer and utter disappointment!  “Mom!  Next time can you please not come so EARLY?!”  It was 4:45.  It was Not very early.  I mean its time to go home and start making dinner kid!

I pumped you for information!  I was so eager to know how it all went!!  You were pretty tight lipped about it all.  But this is what I could gather: It was awesome.  You loved it.  You have “classes.”  Library class, gym class, and on Wednesday you are going to music class.  You said that lunch time was super short and barely anytime to eat.  You are a terribly slow eater so this doesn’t surprise me too much.  You had only enough time to eat your almond butter packet.  But then you had a very nutritious (my eyes are rolling) after school snack of hot dogs, chocolate milk, and pineapple.  Don’t get me started on what american schools are feeding our kids.  That would be you now.  You also said that you did math.  You said, “did you know you can do math by playing with blocks?!”

So, your first day is in the books.  You sailed through it with flying colors.  Your mother was a bit of a hot mess but I made it too.  Verity will probably just stay in daycare forever, okay?  I love you.  I’m so proud of you.  I can’t wait to hear about your days at Kindergarten.  I can’t wait to find out what you learn.

I love you my big girl, Mama

PS.  In case you are wondering.  Sissy also made her own clothing choices today.  She declared herself, Pinkie Pie! from My Little Ponies…

DAY AT THE BEACH

This past weekend we went to Pacific City. The beach was hazy and cool but that did not stop my girls from splashing around and chasing waves on the Oregon Coast!  This was my favorite part of our whole beach day…taking photos of them while they explored.  They drive me crazy but they also delight my soul.  Happy Monday, everyone!

OCTOBER 12-16 | PHOTO-A-DAY 2015

Why is she up on the counter drinking her apple juice with no hands first thing in the morning?  Not sure…but she was sure cute.

Greg is going to KILL me for this one.  But it is SO on point with our bedtime routine right now it’s not even funny.  These girls exhaust every bone and every ounce of energy we have.  When story time rolls around we are just beat.  I have caught Greg time and time again literally falling asleep reading to the girls.  I can’t really blame him, though,  because he does have a soothing reading voice.  I went through a period of time early on in our marriage when I was having a hard time sleeping and the ONLY thing that got me to sleep was him reading to me.  Too bad his voice does not have the same effect on the girls!!  We have stopped fighting the “no snacks after dinner time” fight.  However, they can only have fruits or vegetables after dinner.  Amity prefers her carrots whole.  And her apples whole.  Maybe cutting and slicing fruits and vegetables is for babies…who knows.

I stood on the counter to get this vantage point and they thought that was pretty cool.  Sometimes I do cool things.  Not very often though.

Verity is intently watching her sister totally dominate at this matching game app on the iPhone.  Then she surprised us all when it was her turn and also totally dominated at the game.

Verity has a bit of a reputation in our house for not being a morning person.  Her preferred wake-up time is somewhere around 8:00am.  Get her up any earlier than this and you are going to be walking a fine line, ladies and gentlemen ; )  Boy is she soft and snuggly though!!

Look at that face!!  I love her confidence.  She knows who she is and what she wants.  I seriously can’t wait to see who she becomes as an adult.  I mean, I can.  I for sure can.  Because I think I’ll die if they ever really grow up.  How will I not have them like this anymore?!?!  But we are pretty sure she is going to be The President, a CEO, or someone else in a high powered leadership role.  Mark my words! ; )  I mean look at that face!

My friend Robin Long, who is also a newborn photographer here in Salem (Well, I mean she is like THE newborn photographer here in Salem!) was having a prop destash sale.  So the girls and I went to check it out, and after they had been so good there (wiping only minimal amounts of Cheetos and Doritos powdered cheese on her white leather couch) I rewarded them with a trip to the park.  It was a park we hadn’t been to before, and the leaves out were so pretty.  These capture their personalities so well!

I swear.  Don’t let me move into another house unless the kitchen has GREAT natural light.  I mean that is the room we live in.  That is the room where everything happens.  It’s where I take a ton of photos and I refuse to be fixing crappy incandescent light in lightroom for the rest of my life ; )

I had just come home from a photo shoot and they were in the kitchen goofing around, clipping at Greg’s heels as he was trying to put dinner together.  I was a fresh audience.  “Mom!  Look!  Look! I can balance a book on my head now!!”  Sure enough…

The medal was from their fun-run at school that day.  Both girls ran a ton of laps.  Amity ran 30 and Verity ran 26.  Not bad, Ver, not bad!!  Always keeping up very closely with her big sis.

On my way home from my session Greg had texted me telling me he “needed” chips and salsa.  So I stopped at Marco’s on my way home and got some for him.  Like the good wife I am!  The girls were pretty happy about this delivery too.  This photo is of Verity displaying her great pleasure of the chips and salsa ; )

OCTOBER 1-11 | PHOTO-A-DAY 2015

2015_October_PhotoAday_KAP01October 1, 2015 | Amity

October is here!  I live in a house full of October birthdays.  Verity’s is on the 2nd, Greg’s is on the 22nd, and Amity’s is on the 30th.  Mine?  The lone January birthday.  I’ve been taking a Photo-A-Day of the girls each October.  This will be our fourth year.  I can’t believe we are already 11 days in.

2015_October_PhotoAday_KAP02October 1, 2015 | Verity

Just getting home from school.  They typically get nice and comfortable on the car ride home by taking their shoes off and chucking them onto the floor.  I used to store their shoes in a bin in the closet but it was so hard to find what we were looking for and they just dumped the whole bin out each day and only drove me crazy.  So I got this clear door shoe organizer, and it has been life changing. Okay, not life changing but it’s awesome.  The girls like it too.

It’s Verity Janey’s birthday!  She picked out this toy set from Toys’R Us, and Amity was huffing and puffing that she didn’t get one too.  It’s a lesson in patience (only one more month until it’s her turn) and sharing.  Isn’t it so great to have a sibling?! ; )

Happy THIRD birthday to our baby cakes!!  I wrote more about her birthday over here in this post.

Starting to gather goodies for the big 3rd/5th birthday partay!!  Verity told me she wants a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle birthday party, and Amity still loves Batman and other super heroes, so I did get these themed plates and hopefully that will suffice.  Because what they are really getting is a birthday at the pumpkin patch!

Mothering these two is the greatest joy and privilege but it is also bone tiring.  But these are the moments that I will not tire of.  Wanting to be picked up.  Wanting to be held.  Wanting to be snuggled.  Her skin is so soft and smooth. I’m thankful for these photos that will remind me of her squishy soft 3 year old self.

I usually do the grocery shopping by myself on Sunday afternoons while they nap.  But we were trying to squeeze in as much together time as possible since I’ve been gone so much for work and was about to leave on a business trip.  Thankfully all of the Trader Joe’s patrons made it out unscathed by this wild shopping cart driver.

I usually get most of my groceries at Trader Joes then finish up at Fred Meyer.  The girls had wanted to go into the kids’ club, so after they did that we picked them up and enjoyed soy steamers and coffee in the furniture section.

I mean what’s not to love about this photo?  Cute smiles, matching t-shirts, and pumpkins!  The girls actually directed this photo.  I was trying to load them up into the car, but they are so distractible!!  They were almost to the car when Amity said, “Mom!!  Take a photo of us with the pumpkins!”

We are still at gymnastics on Tuesday mornings!  I’m trying to remember when we started this.  I think it was this spring or early summer.  The girls always look forward to it.  We aren’t too serious about it, just in it for the fun of it.

She is so cute on the bar!  She can hold herslef up for a few seconds too.  Amity recently moved up to a more “advanced” kinder-gym (before, they were in the same class) and Verity has been doing so great on her own.

October 7, 2015 | Amity and Verity

Daddy’s taking over for mommy for the next four days!  I went to San Antonio for a photography conference, so he was in charge of taking their photos each day.  He had permission to use his cell phone ; )

I’m telling you.  They love to do this.  Greg did now know that I had done the same photo a few days earlier.

So what’s a guy to do when his wife leaves town for days on end?  Take the kids to his parents’ house for reinforcements!  They were busy with so many fun things!  Fishing was up first.

I think the number 1 thing that Greg dreads the most when I’m gone?  Doing the girls’ hair.  He had texted this photo to me while I was gone with the caption, “Saved!”  lol  Thanks to Grandma they had some stylish up-dos while I was away.

They rode the ferry into Seattle to go to the Aquarium.  Greg reported back to me that the Seattle Aquarium is top notch!  He also said they were so well behaved on this outing.

Mama’s home!!  Man was it so good to be home.  I had such a great trip.  I learned a lot, was very inspired, saw a new city, and bonded with my dear friend.  Then it was time to come home, and the girls were SO happy to see me when they woke up Sunday morning.  I felt like a super star celebrity.  I had fun giving them a few little goodies: Nikon notebooks, fairy dust, fairy wands, and unicorn bandaids.  You know how they love bandaids.

2015_October_PhotoAday_KAP21October 11, 2015 | Verity

While Amity’s nap is getting noticeably shorter (1 – 1.5 hours) Verity regularly takes 2-3 hour naps.  I usually have to wake her up so she doesn’t go too late past 4:00pm.  This was one such case!  I had just opened the blinds in her room and caught her waking up.
